Set in the fictional region of Manawaka modeled on the province of Manitoba where Margaret Laurence grew up, The Stone Angel is a brilliant, poignant tale of loss, heartbreak, and old age with a fiery, unforgettable female character at its core. I loved it so much that I’ve already bought the next book in the Manawaka series, A Jest of God, and plan to read the others as well. I must thank Dorian, Frances and Rebecca, hosts of the lovely bookish podcast One Bright Book for bringing Margaret Laurence’s The Stone Angel to my attention they will be discussing this novel in their next episode (very much looking forward to it).
